Waterfall fun in Stickle Ghyll - Summer Holidays in the Lake District
Summer Holidays in the Lake District
So, the summer holiday season is almost coming to a close. Schools will be back in a week or so and for those up north in Scotland there’ll already be back in the classroom.
If you visited the Lake District during July/August it’s very likely you got pretty wet. There has been a colossal amount of rain, I think something like 250% of the seasonal average. Could this be to do with La Niña? Well let’s hope it’s a calmer and drier autumn.
This summer we have seen a surge in demand for Canyoning and Gorge Scrambling. These are the perfect wet weather activities and we are really happy to welcome so many of you to these beautiful environments. As summer turns to autumn so it is still a perfect time of year to enjoy these fabulous activities, actually right through to the end of October. Then when November comes we’ll be hanging up the wetsuits until next season.
On the subject of wetsuits, we pride ourselves in providing top quality suits for all participants and we regularly add to our stock of 5mm Lomo wetsuits. But we do need to play our small part in helping to reduce waste, so if a wetsuit gets a small rip we always patch it back up with similarly thick neoprene.
We are often asked ‘what’s our favourite gorge’? The honest answer is, ‘It depends’. We love them all. On a glorious sunny day it will be The Mighty Esk. If the weather isn’t quite behaving it’ll be Church Beck. And if there’s been a deluge of rain the answer becomes Stickle Ghyll.
All wonderful venues, all with so much to offer. The last couple of days we’ve been in Stickle Ghyll and water levels have been huge. This has made it huge fun too. We are due to be back in there tomorrow and can’t wait. But are really hoping the current heavy rainfall does abate or there may be too much of it!
This summer we have also been guiding: Hikes; Rock Climbing; Abseils; and Cycling trips. There have been a few top notch mountaineering days too to places such as Pillar Rock and Pinnacle Ridge.
Here’s a few shots from recent days out in the gorges. Interested? Get in touch and let’s make a plan.
