Gorge Scrambling

Gorge Scrambling

Climbing up waterfalls, jumping into crystal clear pools, scrambling over rocks...

What is it?
Climbing up waterfalls, jumping into crystal clear pools, scrambling over rocks and boulder hopping. Sliding down water chutes and wild swimming. In a nutshell, that’s what gorge scrambling is all about.

How much fun:
However much fun you think this is going to be, multiple it by 10 and you’re getting close. It really is that good, a total blast and definitely the most fun outdoor activity here in the Lake District.

Where & when:
We operate all over the Lake District and have been providing gorge scrambling activities to all ages for around 15 years now. Wherever you are staying whilst holidaying here, we’ll know a great gorge scramble nearby. Our gorge activities start from mid-March and run through until the end of October.

Is it suitable for me?
Yes. There are gorges here to suit all levels. We have taken children as young as 4 and adults in their late 70’s. We have also taken many stag and hen groups that are looking to be challenged and to do the biggest jumps. We will tailor the experience to suit.

Our Routes

A few of our more regular venues include:

  • Stickle ghyll: Our favourite and for good reason. We believe this is the best introduction to the activity in the Lake District. With waterfall climbs, plunge pools, loads of scrambling, there is plenty to entertain all with a new and fun challenge around every corner. The scenery is superb and the setting is open and sunny, so it’s one of the ‘warmest’ gorges in the Lake District. With easy access, plentiful parking and a family friendly pub at the base this has a lot going for it.
  • Tilberthwaite ghyll: the perfect place for young children to try Ghyll scrambling for the first time. Fun climbs up cascades, pool plunges, tunnel squeezes, and boulder hopping. All at a super accessible and sheltered venue.
  • Whorneyside Force: If you’re looking for huge waterfalls to abseil through, gorgeous scenery, and crystal clear pools to swim then look no further for you have found your destiny. Hidden deep in the Langdale valley, this experience has a wilderness feel about it. The main event of descending the huge waterfall is sure to give lasting memories. There is an approach walk of around 35 minutes to reach this venue and we only recommend this on during spells of good weather.
  • Stoneycroft Ghyll (canyon descent): Another favourite of ours, this brilliant gorge offers an action packed trip full of slides, waterfalls, and swims. Within easy reach Keswick, this is the place to aim for when visiting the north lakes and in search of water based fun. Equally suitable for adults and children, making this an idea venue for families.
  • Church beck: With loads of fun challenges, waterfall climbs and rock walls to traverse across as well as some really cool pool jumps. This is a great adventure that’s suitable for all ages. It’s Stickle Ghyll on steroids! Please note this venue attracts an access fee which all commercial providers must pay. This results in a small additional fee being passed on to our clients.
  • Churck beck – canyon descent:  So you’ve tried ghyll scrambling and loved it, it’s amazing huh. Now you want more, well this is it. Canyoning in this deep ravine with abseiling, plunge pools, slides, jumps, and swimming in a wilderness setting that offers a ‘full on’ challenge. It’s certainly one to remember! Arrive with a sense of adventure, leave with a big smile. Suitable for teens and adults.
  • Esk gorge (full day out): The ultimate Lakeland gorge without reproach, this is the big one. A walk of around 45 minutes is needed to access this beautiful and remote place, but the rewards and experience will remain with you forever. Without further ado, the start is a big jump into crystal clear waters and wild swimming at its best. Scrambling takes us upstream and on to many more brilliant jumps into deep and clear pools of pure Lakeland water. As days out go, this is mind blowing. More about the Esk here.
  • Dungeon ghyll: This is a perfect accompaniment to the nearby Stickle Ghyll and can be included into the same trip. We climb water chutes and cascades through increasingly beautiful scenery.
