Puig Campana - walks and scrambles with a difference

Today we’ve been back up on the mighty Puig Campana, the finest, most iconic mountain in the Provence of Alicante. I have climbed a few of the massive rock routes on its south-west faces and spent many enjoyable days on the mountain.

I remember the first time I visited the big notch (Roldans) we also ticked the summit just left of this and at the time I thought we’d done what is known as Pic Prim. Many would refer to it as Pic Prim. Well, this is incorrect. Pic Prim is on the northern side of the big notch and not so easy to reach.

A few weeks ago we set out with Pic Prim in our sights, we had some insight from a friend and it was suggested we wouldn’t need a rope or climbing gear. Well when we reached the initial ridge scramble we both agreed that a rope might be a good idea. So sadly we bailed on our attempt at the summit.

Not one to be easily defeated, today was time for another look. This time from the south-west side so we could include a long and intricate scramble to reach the notch. This in itself was loads of fun.

After a sunny start the clouds closed in on us and this made route finding in this complex terrain very challenging. Between us we managed to stay on track and on rock as much as possible. Very quickly we were in the dramatic setting of Roldans notch. When the clouds cleared the views were indeed fantastic.

So now was time for a proper explore. My hope was to find a gangway leading out in the general direction of the big gully. Whilst there was a gangway for a short way, this abruptly ended and there was no way to continue. So after a spot of lunch, we began our descent via a short abseil. A short walk then got us into the main gully - known as the vertical km. From here I was able to spot more potential route lines that could make a circular route up onto Pic Prim.

Maybe another day up there is needed and this elusive summit can finally be won. It’s certainly proving to be a hard win.

So is there a walking / scrambling route up onto Pic Prim?

No.

When I say no, I mean it’s not ideal as a solo ascent without a rope. Take a rope and some climbing gear and yes it becomes accessible and that’s what I plan to do when time allows.

The mountain was quiet today, we came across very few people, saw no climbers, just enjoyed complete peace and quiet. The clouds swooping in from time to time adding to the overall atmosphere and mystery.

All in all a fabulous day out. Thanks to my good friend Kim for joining.
