Jim leading a HVS at Long Scar - Beginner rock climbing in the Lake District
Beginner rock climbing in the Lake District
We have been regularly climbing in the Lake District for getting on 20 years now and whilst we don’t know every crag, we know lots of them, having worked and played on them many many times.
Some places just keep drawing us back. The Pike O’Blisco crags of Long Scar and Black Crag are two such venues.
What is it that draws us back year after year? Well there are plenty of reasons. Firstly, the situation high above the valley provides impressive views. And secondly, the quality of the rock is impeccable. These factors alone are more than enough of a draw, but add in the sheer amount of brilliant climbing throughout the grade spectrum and these are set to be winners all round.

Yesterday I was back up on the Pike O’Blisco crags with friends Jim of Lake District Climbing, Nick the Mountain Medicine man, Ash and Chris. All being full hill going members of the Langdale and Ambleside Mountain Rescue team, which is a reassuring thought. We paired up and climbed a wide variety of routes from the easy and traditional ‘The Needle’ to the steeper, bolder and harder ‘Something Stupid’ HVS. A top rope was also put up on ‘The First Touch’ a delicate E1 which none of us fancied leading.
I think we each did about 5 routes or thereabouts and would’ve stayed for more, but clouds had covered the warming sun and a stiff breeze was conspiring to chill us somewhat. So we called time on the days fun and sauntered back to the roadside at the Wrynose Pass. Such a delightful session of climbing with good folk, a hard thing to beat.Â

On any day in any season when the weather is being kind, these crags are well worth a visit. I recall numerous visits during the winter and having really good times on warm rock. Just be wary of the wind direction and speed. Also, the top of the crags can be very exposed to the wind whilst the base will likely be sheltered. Pack a jacket!Â
