The Best Rock Climbs in the Lake District
The Lake District has been basking in the sun yet again, we could definitely get used to this.
I have been climbing with fellow outdoor instructor Nick, who was keen to head up to Gimmer crag in Langdale. This is without doubt my favourite crag in Langdale, well actually, my favourite crag in the country. Yes it's that good and then some.
In order that we maximise time in the sun, we choose to start with a climb on the Main Wall area. 'Three Tiers Climb' gave us 2 contrasting pitches of climbing on immaculate rock, utterly brilliant. The descent from here is quick and easy, which meant we had plenty time for more climbing.
After a fair amount of guidebook flicking, we settled for a route neither of us had previously climbed. 'The Crimson Pirate'. Marginally easier then our first climb today, but still interesting and sustained throughout. Excellent rock quality, loads of protection where needed, and exciting positions all the way. A brilliant route.
A quick tally this evening shows i've climbed 23 routes at Gimmer, many of which i've repeated numerous times over the years. Every route has been excellent, thoroughly enjoyable, and something i'd be happy to repeat time and time again.
Further to this, the rock dries quickly, takes almost no drainage, and receives lots of sun (when the clouds part that is). All this adds up to a mountain crag that can be in condition for many months of the year.
The best rock climbing in the Lake District - we think so. What do you think? Have a flick through the FRCC guide and see what they think too
Thanks to Nick for a great day.
