The route to Wray Castle - Best Bike Rides in the Lake District
Best Bike Rides in the Lake District……
When visiting a new area it can be tricky to choose the best activities. If looking for something adventurous some canyoning rather hits the spot and we can highly recommend this -Â CanyoningÂ
For mountain walks a look over an Ordnance Survey map will usually reveal plenty of options and for those wanting the reassurance of a guide, calling us can fix that -Â Guided WalksÂ
But it may be that you’re visiting the Lake District and planning to ride bikes. Whether this be on or off-road, simply looking at a map isn’t going to give the important details of what the surface condition is like. Is it rideable, is it fun, is it worth it, or are there better options? This is another area we can help with as we now offer guided gravel and road rides. We can help with hire bikes too and of course it’s fine to bring your own.
Just this week we’ve been out on the bikes with a visiting couple who wanted to explore more sights than a walk could manage in a short space of time. So we set off from Ambleside and using bridleways and quiet lanes were soon at our first point of interest, Wray castle. Then it was onwards to the quiet western shores of Windermere. Bridleways follow this shoreline all the way to Ferry Nab.
Joeys Cafe was our next stopping point. We refuelled with hot chocolate whilst sitting in autumnal sunshine.
A tarmac lane took us steeply up to Sawrey then the terrain eased and Esthwaite Water came into view. This gave us a few fine photo opportunities before we pedalled on to Hawkshead and another refuelling stop. The finest gingerbread in the world can now be bought in Hawkshead thanks to the expansion of Grasmere Gingerbread.
From here we used quiet lanes, all with wonderful views, to take us to the River Brathay which we then followed back to Ambleside.
A wide variety of terrain was covered with plenty of ascent mixed in. Any roads we used were quiet and all the surfaces were perfect for a gravel bike.
This was a relatively short ride and a nice relaxed pace was taken. We can offer all levels, from short journeys of 15-20km’s right up to full days in the saddle covering 100+km’s. Routes are bespoke meaning we’ll design a day just for you.
With Guided Walks, Rock Climbing, Abseiling, Gorge Scrambling, Canyoning, and Cycling all on offer, we can help to make your stay here in the Lake District even better.
Give us a call / e-mail and let's make a plan....
