Mountain Leader Refresher
For most of us, the Mountain Leader Award is a really big deal. 5 days of intense scrutiny of all your mountain skills during all weathers! It's a tough assessment, yet for those well prepared can also be quite enjoyable, in an exam sort of way!
It's not an award to be taken lightly either, taking people into the mountains is a serious role, demanding a high level of respect and self discipline. It's often the case you'll be dealing with varied ability groups and it takes lots of practice and skill to do this effectively, whilst making sure everyone enjoys the day.
Navigation is an area many are found to be weak in. This is often down to lack of time spent out in the mountains during poor weather or at night. A simple solution to this is to get out there. But if you are feeling unsure about the navigation, some additional input may well be key to success. We can join you for a day or night navigation session and will work on building your skills and confidence in readiness for assessment.
Unplanned use of the rope - another area that has candidates in a panic! This is totally avoidable, the rope skills required during an ML assessment are basic, although it does take time to understand good anchor selection and to get quick at it. We can show you simple methods that are safe, quick, and appropriate to the situation, therefore putting you in a good place ready for assessment success. These skills can be practiced in the valley to maximise time spent with the rope out.
Group management - an area that can prove difficult to practice before assessment. Whilst we can't offer you ready made groups to take out, we can offer simulated scenarios in a variety of settings. So you get to practice spotting, navigating, confidence roping, protecting a step with use of the rope, and more.
