November in Stickle Ghyll - Lake District Gorge Walking
Lake District Gorge Walking - The fun continues into autumn
A while back I remember having a conversation with a friend and fellow adventurous activity provider regarding offering gorge and canyon trips throughout the winter. Not something we offer as we head to Spain for our winter program there. But in the past I have spent plenty winter days getting wet in the gorges here, so know it’s very feasible.
I think overall we agreed it was a sensible decision to start offering this as a year round activity. Then I had a few bookings some through for early November and started to think, hmmm, that’s going to be chilly! Planning is always important to make an activity session work well and this is enhanced when the temps take a tumble. Venue and equipment were all on point and all customers well briefed.
However, November has so far proved to be quite wonderful here in the Lakes. Glorious autumnal colours, not a breath of wind, almost no rain (although it feels very damp), and higher than average temperatures, double figures most days. All this means toasty warm days in the gorge. Add in a minimum of 5mm wetsuits with the option of an additional 3mm neoprene jacket and we start to have the danger of people complaining of being too hot!! Here’s what Lynette thought of her experience with us this week:
‘Mark was a great guide! I've never done ghyll scrambling before so he guided me but still allowed me the independence to find my way up the ghyll. The ghyll is just stunning and it was heaps of fun! I loved every minute!’ - see our TripAdvisor page for more. Thanks Lynette.
Knowing the venues as well as we do means we can advise on the most appropriate venue for you and your group. Weather and time of year will always be factored into this decision too. For many, this time of year it’s going to be Stickle Ghyll in the Langdale Valley. This offers easy access, loads of fun challenges, and a route that can be varied to suit all. It is a ‘warmer’ venue too and the Lanty Slee pub is at the finish line for those wanting a hot drink afterwards.
And for a small, adult only group Church Beck is still on the cards at this time. Just expect this one to feel a bit chilly as it catches less natural light What it offers though are some really cool pool jumps, gorgeous waterfalls and the best waterslide in the Lakes.
Both Stickle Ghyll and Church Beck offer very easy access from most Lake District locations and are particularly convenient for anyone staying around Windermere, Bowness, Ambleside, Coniston and Grasmere.Â
For more information about these and all the many other activities we offer please check out our Activities page here. We have good availability throughout November, so please do get in touch.
