High Mountain Scrambles of Costa Blanca - Penyo Roc

I couple of years ago we stumbled across a really fun scramble up onto Penyo Roc. These huge cliffs form the edge of the Aitana mountain range and are suitably impressive. This winter I’ve had the pleasure of following this scrambling route on two occasions already. First time was on a research trip for the forthcoming edition of Costa Blanca Walks and Scrambles by Cicerone. And second time around I was showing Lizzie and Kim the route.

On both occasions we had glorious sunshine, but were also joined by strong winds on the second run, that made for some exciting moves here and there.

At 1108m the Penyo Roc summit is pretty high, but due to the excellent mountain roads here, it is very easy to access these summits. Most of the drive is on the super smooth Guadalest road and this is followed by just a very short distance on a single track lane. It is actually possible to drive up to the Pas de Comptador at 970m and start this route from there, but the track is rough and could prove problematic for a regular car or nervous driver. So most will opt for leaving the vehicle at the end of the tarmac.

From the Pas de Comptador this route takes to tiny paths and soon hits rock to wind a way up through some impressive terrain and all at an amenable grade and angle. Hands will touch rock, but expect mild scrambling rather than anything 'full-on'. Cairns help to mark the way.

Once up top a short, rocky ridge scramble can extend the fun before it’s time to take to animal tracks on a traverse over to Port de l’Arc. Here a better track leads down to the valley and back to the starting point.

Who’s this for?

Anyone wanting a straightforward scramble through glorious scenery

People new to scrambling and wanting to try it for the first time

Regular hill walkers in search of a little more adventure off the beaten track

Climbers wanting a rest from the crags but keen for some mountain action

How long will it take?

Around 5 hours. But the drive up into the hills needs to be factored in, so think of this as a day out. Combine it with a visit to nearby Guadalest to see its many museums and quaint streets

Weather considerations:

Avoid on a damp day or if rain is forecast. First time we did this we got caught in a rainstorm, it wasn’t pleasant.

During the winter months, most days are likely to be ideal for this route. One consideration, especially if arriving early, is ice on the shaded approach track.

Do I need any specialist equipment?

No, just regular hiking gear

Do I need a guide?

Well that depends. But if unsure, or to help take any uncertainties out of the day it could be a good idea. We can help, get in touch here

Are there any mountain adventure guidebooks out there?

Yes, here's one we made earlier: Costa Blanca Mountain Adventures

Thanks for reading

Mark
