Today was a complete contrast, with warm sunshine all day and warm rock too.
I had previously visited Little How Crag about 5 or 6 years ago and I remember enjoying the climbing and in particular, the outlook from the crag was memorable.
Today was no disappointment. Levers Water looked glorious, almost good enough to tempt us in for a swim, but hey, it's still March!! The sun was beating down on the crag and warming the rough volcanic rock, making it a pleasure to touch.
I took the first lead of the day with a route called Thunderclap (VS 4c). This proved to be an immaculate slab requiring delicate moves throughout, often thought provoking to gain the correct sequence. The protection offered by cracks in the rock was more than adequate and overall this felt like an ego boosting route, splendid.
This being a little frequented crag, the descent route was unused and quite a challenge, being on very steep grass with a few rock steps. Thankfully we had our approach shoes with us!
After a spot of lunch it was Sam's lead, this time a route called Thunder Slab (HS). The main pitch of this provided yet more glorious climbing of a delicate nature, all on perfect rock. There was a short (and easy) pitch to finish this route which I lead. It didn't really feel like part of the route, more of a continuation scramble.
Needing to be back in Ambleside by around 5pm we called it a day and set off on the hour long walk back to Walna Scar.
