Mountain Journeys

Navigation course – Lake District

Mountain navigation is an area many people find tricky to grasp, but it needn't be. The skills are straightforward, but need regular practice to keep them sharp.

Today was about sharpening those skills for Lynda who is preparing for a navigation assessment at the end of the month.
We used the Tilberthwaite fells and covered: Contour interpretation; relocation skills; orienteering the map; bearings; linear features; pacing; attack points; aiming off; back bearings; and a few other skills.

This is an area I too am quite unfamiliar with and was pleasantly surprised with the varied landscape and stunning views we found.
The result of the day was an improvement from Lynda, but the big result we achieved was an increase in confidence, nice one.
