Guided walking in the Lake District

A sunlit valley as we ascend Skiddaw
It was 6 years ago when Suzy first joined us for a guided walk here in the Lake District. This weekend she was back, with her friend Lisa, and some big mountains were on the cards.
On Saturday morning we set off for Helvellyn. Having discussed the various route options, it was clear that Striding Edge would be part of our day. With a breezy and wet day forecast this could be quite an exciting place, so we kept options open until Red Tarn, where there was no wind and only a little light rain. Lisa wasn't overly keen for Striding Edge but wanted to give it a go, so off we went, in search of scrambling adventure. Both Suzy and Lisa soon got into a rhythm along the edge, we were overtaking most others, storming along as we were. It was on the summit of Helvellyn the wind showed itself, maybe 35mph and pretty wet by now. A quick photo stop on the summit and we blasted down Swirral Edge and back out of the wind, during the descent both Red Tarn and Striding Edge came into full view. I think Lisa was pretty chuffed at what she had just done :-)

Gentle walking back towards Glenridding finished the day off nicely. Back to Holbeck Ghyll Hotel for hot chocolate and a spa.

Sunday brought along slightly breezier conditions and on the breeze came some precipitation. As this was due to be least around the North Lakes, we opted for Skiddaw. The path is mostly easy on Skiddaw, although at times fairly steep. Our fun came from around Little Man upwards, where the wind was trying vey hard to make us fly!! At the South Summit 4 guys appeared out of the mist, all clinging to each other for stability. This confirmed to me we would turn back at this point. We had reached a summit, and at 925m almost the very top of Skiddaw. But there was no sense in risking the additional buffeting the summit plateau would give, there was too much chance of one of us being blown over.

A rapid retreat to get back behind the shelter of Little Man and we were able to walk normally again. Shortly after, the clouds parted and views into Borrowdale opened up, simply magical. Being out in the mountains during such weather is absolutely brilliant, if somewhat tiring.
The local rotary club were hosting an event near the base of Skiddaw. Even a mobile cafe, so we enjoyed hot chocolate and cake before heading for home.

Thanks to Suzy & Lisa

Lake District climbing - The Best

The hot summer weather continues and we look to be in for another week of 'el scorchio' - bring it on.

It's been 'all systems go' here, with lots of mountain and crag days and nights with many lovely people.
Thankfully a few of these days have been spent in the cool, clear waters of the Lakeland Gorges. These are simply wonderful right now and the perfect way to cool off after a warm (very hot) day on the fells.

Back on Sunday we took New Zealanders Sue & Izzie to Stickle Ghyll for a cool, refreshing dip. They then headed off up Scafell Pike whilst I took Alli and his pals into Stickle Ghyll during the afternoon.

On Monday & Tuesday I was out with Charlie & Ed. Firstly for a traverse of the Helvellyn ridges, Striding & Swirral. We flew over this in super quick time, handy given the hot weather. And for Tuesday we headed to Borrowdale for an 'introduction to trad' day for Ed visiting Steel Knotts Bluff and Shepherds crag. We climbed the super classic 'Little Chamonix' at Shepherds. Our associate instructor Paddy Cave was also busy for us at Shepherds. Climbing with Vince from the States and also on Little Chamonix before cranking the pace up a notch to blast up 'Ardus' - with Vince doing much of the leading.

On Tuesday night I met up with Nissan UK for a very rapid ascent of Scafell Pike, more about that here

Wednesday afternoon we were back in the Langdale valley with Tim and Liam from Ireland. Enjoying the cooling waters of Stickle Ghyll before braving the 'hot rock' at Scout crags. And yes it was very hot rock, almost hand burning hot!! That must be a first in the Lake District!!!!

On Friday we arranged a Birthday Abseil for David and Kay. For this we went to Hodge Close Quarry. Quite a 'full on' place for a first abseil and both took it in their stride. I heard recently there's some DWS lines emerging at this quarry, wow is it really that hot? Yes it is :-)

We've also enjoyed some fine trips out with friends. Firstly to Glenridding Beck in Patterdale. This fine little gorge provides really fun adventure in a beautiful setting. Good for kids and adults and with an easy approach walk. A big plunge pool is the finale.
And Friday afternoon was a trip to Dow crag. That was a sweaty walk in!!! Hats and T-shirts dipped in Goats Water helped cool us off nicely. The crag was busy, with lots of action on A Buttress and Upper B Buttress in particular. We began with Leopards Crawl HVS. Described in the FRCC guidebook as 'a masterpiece' and wow it really is. Such an impressive line with hard for the grade climbing and tricky to read moves. The first pitch in particular has a very serious feel to it, with very spaced protection on this rising traverse. The second pitch felt much easier, but still plenty of interest and no push over.
We finished the afternoon with a quick blast up Murrays Route. This is a bit easier so a nice warm down. Even as we walked away from the crag at around 7.30pm there were plenty of climbers still enjoying the routes. Well it is light until around 11pm and warm enough all night at the moment, let's make the most of it.

Thanks all for a fabulous week

Mark

Helvellyn via Striding Edge

Megan on Striding Edge
It's only just over a week since I returned from warm & sunny Costa Blanca. I've already enjoyed the pleasure of numerous days out in the mountains and at crags in the Lakes and a day in the Yorkshire Dales. But today was my first proper day out in the mountains, and it felt fantastic......

Joined by Megan from Bristol, who was very keen to try out Striding Edge. We began our ascent in Patterdale, walked along Grisedale for a short way before the ascent to 'Hole in the Wall' and the beginning of Striding Edge. The day started wet and windy, but forecasts suggested this would abate. We wrapped up warm and pressed on.

By the time we arrived at Striding Edge, the clouds were already lifting markedly, and the rain had indeed stopped :-)
Even the wind was being kind, it had subsided from 'blow us over' gale force, to 'a bit wobbly' gale force!! This allowed us to enjoy the crest of Striding Edge for more of the time, only ducking to one side when the breeze picked up again.

There's a small patch of avoidable snow on the final ascent to the summit of Helvellyn, but no need for technical equipment (although I had brought along an ice axe just in case). A quick rest and refuel at the summit before beginning our descend via Nethermost Pike and Dollywagon Pike. By now the clouds had lifted above the summits and the glorious Lake District was showing itself off in style.
It was during the traverse of the plateau that the wind really made it's presence felt. Despite the wind being Southerly, it was jolly cold, even with gloves on my hands were unwilling to cooperate for much of the time and I think Megan was feeling the same. Surprisingly this strong wind stayed with us until well below Grisedale Tarn, then suddenly it stopped and all was warm and pleasant. Hats, gloves, coats could all come off, sunglasses on (had we remembered them that is) and sunscreen on. Grisedale was looking glorious and had reminded me of just how beautiful the Lake District is.

Thanks Megan for good company today, hope you enjoy the rest of your hols.

Striding Edge
This week the Lake District is being blessed with amazing weather conditions on the mountains. Perfect for an ascent of Helvellyn via the fabulous Striding Edge.
I met with Jayne at the Helvellyn YHA above Glenridding. Walking from here skips out the initial slog up the road from the valley floor, so a nice head start.

There was a cloud inversion, so we began our ascent towards Red Tarn shrouded in cloud, this helped keep us cool. Shortly before arriving at the tarn we broke through the cloud and were treated to wonderful views of the surrounding mountains, all cloaked in mist. After a brief rest at Red tarn and a chat with a friend, we continued towards Striding Edge. This is always a pleasure to traverse, but even more so during warm, sunny days like today. Due to the good weather, we paused a few times for photos, well why not.

Lunch on Helvellyn summit and a return via Swirral Edge brought us back to Red tarn, which was by now really quite busy with picnickers and swimmers.

Thanks for a grand day out Jayne.

Big walks in the Lake District

Scafell-Pike-and-Scafell
On Wednesday & Thursday of this week I met up with Kim, Barbara, Julia, and Vicky for two days of challenging walking over the rugged Lakeland fells.
This is the 7th time we've been out together since our first easy walk around the shores of Rydal and Grasmere. How things have changed since then! We've now ticked off the Lakes 3000's, Welsh 3000's (most of), Lakes 24 peaks, Wasdale horseshoe, and Ennerdale horseshoe!!! Some massive walks there and so much fun along the way.

This time it was to be the Langdale horseshoe on day one and Helvellyn via Striding Edge on day two.

The forecast was very good, and actually turned out even better than expected, with clear skies and light winds the whole time.
Meeting at 8.30am on Wednesday we set off from the National Trust campsite in Langdale to ascend by Stickle ghyll to the tarn and on to Pavey Ark, this is the big uphill of the day. The summits we then climbed are: Thurnacarr Knott; Esk Pike; Bowfell; Crinkle Crags; and Pike O' Blisco. 14 miles and around 1550 metres of ascent and descent over a wide variety of mountain terrain, including the notorious 'Bad step' on Crinkle crags! Descending from Pike O' Blisco there was some 'leg shake' evident from our tired muscles, but nothing stops these determined and super fit ladies. We had whizzed around this long route in 8 hours and I was definitely feeling pretty knackered by now and wandering how to recover quick enough for Helvellyn the following day!

Thankfully I wasn't the only one feeling some tiredness from the Langdale walk, so the pace was a little more gentle (only a little though)!
A slightly later start and shorter walk was in store today, and again the weather was perfect. Upon arrival at Red Tarn we noticed a few tents and plenty of campers. Julia was even offered a cup of tea. The tarn was perfectly still, mirroring the Helvellyn headwall and adding to the drama & beauty of our surroundings. For all it would have been a cold night to camp high up, but the rewards would have been high.

Striding Edge soon focused our minds and concentration levels went up in line with the drop below. Myself and Barbara opting to stay on the crest the whole way, whilst the others occasionally used the small path to the right. The tricky down climb was passed with ease and all that was left was the final scramble up to the summit of Helvellyn. Lunch at the summit seemed a good plan, and whilst there we could enjoy a view of yesterdays route, not bad.
We continued over Lower Man and White side, before descending to the valley to arrive back at the car in a little under 4 hours, nice one.

Really lovely to see you all again and to meet Vicky. So much fun and so many entertaining stories along the way. Thanks so much and hopefully see you again for more big walks next year.

Striding Edge, Helvellyn: Thursday 28th August 2014

Today was day 3 with father & son team Scott & Scott.

A few ideas had been bounced around as to what to do, and with an eye to the weather forecast, we elected Striding Edge on Helvellyn.

From the YHA above Glenridding we blasted our way to Red Tarn, a quick breather here whilst looking at map skills and before we had chance for a sit down, it was off again full steam ahead for the ridge.

This speed was for good reason, the rain was due to arrive around 1pm and would be heavy.

Once on Striding Edge, we slowed the pace (a little), in order to enjoy the landscape, the rock, the atmosphere, and the beauty of our surroundings.

Sadly such ridges come to an end, but at least with this one the end is the fine summit of Helvellyn. There were fine views on offer, but we could also observe some nasty weather approaching, so lunch was delayed.

A hasty retreat down Swirral Edge brought us back to the shelter of Red Tarn.

The rain had started, but who cares, we'd had our fun, enjoyed dry rock and extensive summit views, now was the steady plod back to base.

3 hours round trip was pretty impressive. A short day out, but the mileage still done and a major Lakeland peak too.
