Lake District activities for families

Enjoying the brilliant scrambling on Raven crag
This summer has been our busiest to date, with pretty much non-stop activities happening daily. So a BIG thanks to all who joined in the fun, we really appreciate you choosing us for your Lake District adventures and activities.

September too is looking nicely busy, but with a more generous helping of downtime, so time to do some of our own exploring in preparation for yet more fun times next summer and beyond. This exploring has already began and I'll be writing about one such place in the next blog post.
It is also time for us to start preliminary planning for our winter activities in the Costa Blanca. It's only a month until I head out to sunnier climes, so time to be thinking about any shiny new equipment that may be needed for the coming season.

This post shows some a few recent days out amongst the beautiful Lakeland Fells with many lovely people. Firstly, an afternoon spent Scrambling on Raven crag in Yewdale. We had a warm, sunny day, dry rock that is super grippy, and our reward for reaching the top was loads of Wild Bilberry and stunning views over to Coniston Water. We were joined by 2 families, including 4 youngsters. This proved to be an ideal afternoon activity with just the right amount of challenge to ensure the youngsters were all stretched.
You will find some organisations impose a lower age limit on various activities and we can understand why this is so. However, we only have advisory age limits as each individual is different, with some adventurous 5 year olds being very able and more willing than much older kids. As an example, we are taking a 4 year old rock climbing next month! Along with his parents of course!
We have taken quite a few youngsters through the upper section of the Church Beck canyon in Coniston and to the remote Esk Gorge. All have absolutely loved the experience. But these are not first timers, they have been on similar activities previously, so we and they know capabilities.

The photo below showing us dry scrambling alongside Stickle Ghyll was the start of a mountaineering style day in Langdale. This family had contacted us looking for a scrambling day based on Langdale and at some point Jack's Rake was mentioned. We put together a flexible plan of scrambles that would take us to the summit of either Pavey Ark or Harrison Stickle. As with many of our days out, flexibility is key to success. We began scrambling within a couple of minutes of the National Trust car park at Stickle Barn and followed the Stickle Ghyll water course all the way to Tarn Crag. And yes we stayed dry all the way :-)
We then meandered our way through the rocky spurs and buttresses of Tarn crag, deploying the rope for some short, steep sections. Whilst walking around Stickle tarn it became clear that some weren't keen to go up Jack's Rake, whilst others had unfinished business there. So the team split into the 'picnic by the tarn' and 'Jack's Rake' teams. Naturally I was in the Jack's Rake team with Tim, who was quite apprehensive about the scramble ahead.

We took our time and discussed good scrambling technique and movement, but also stopping to enjoy the views and increased exposure. I could sense the doubt still present in Tim, but this was subsiding as we gained more and more height. His feeling of elation and achievement when I announced we had reached the top was quite a WOW moment. It's times like this that makes our job so worthwhile. The satisfaction and happiness on peoples faces is priceless. A hop, skip, and jump (no, not literally) and we were back at the tarn and fast catching up with Carman and Edith. Another hugely successful day out in the mountains, oh yes.

Gorge scrambling has been a big hit this summer, and rightly so as it's tons of fun and still tons of fun in the rain. The final photo in this post shows perfectly how to jump into that pool in Stickle Ghyll. Some of the gorges here can be equally suitable for 5 - 50 year olds and complete novices or seasoned mountaineers. They really are that varied.

This goes back to being flexible. And as we know hundreds of routes throughout the Lake District, you can rest assured that we can be flexible not only in our approach but also venue choice and how we help you through the activity.

Thanks again all, we hope to see you again soon.

Mark & Kate

Enjoying high water flow in Stickle Ghyll
With the summer holidays now in full swing. Many have chosen to visit the Lake District, which we think is a great idea.

There is loads to do here come rain or shine, and yes, during summer there does seem to be quite a few damp days! This of course makes the sunny days (we have those too) all the better and more enjoyable.

So what to do when the weather forecast is mixed and changeable. Well, there are plenty of indoor attractions in the area, although for youngsters , castles and stately homes can get a bit boring rather quickly. Why not instead stay outdoors and enjoy a super fun, high energy, full octane Lakeland adventure in one of the many gorges throughout the area.
It won't matter if it's raining, you will be getting very wet anyway and we'll provide you with snug and warm wetsuits to help protect you from the elements and keep everyone toasty. A decent amount of rain actually makes Gorge Scrambling even more fun as the true power of white water can be experienced. We scramble, swim, jump, and climb our way up the gorges or, if preferred, we can jump, swim, abseil, and slide our way down the canyons.

Here's a few photos from recent days out. Whilst we are now almost booked up for August, there are still a few slots available and remember, there's always September.

Thanks for reading

Mark

Enjoying the spa pool
A last minute booking for the gorge this morning and as we had a walk booked in for late afternoon there was plenty of time for this one too.
Conditions were near perfect, with sunshine, warm temps, and plenty of water. The gorge was also really quiet, so we had loads of time to play around in the pools and tackle the challenges. From the moment we set off I could sense Amy and Sarah were going to be a ton of fun and be totally psyched for everything the gorge has to offer. And they were.

They took on every challenge, climbed the waterfalls, jumped into the pools (many times), and just couldn't get enough of it. It's fair to say that neither were camera shy either, so some good snaps of the trip.

Thanks both for a super fun morning, really hope to see you again for a trip to the Esk gorge.

If you're visiting the Lake District and thinking about booking a fun activity, give us a call and let's make a plan. Gorge Scrambling, Canyoning, Rock climbing, Abseiling, and Guided walks.

Enjoying the recent high water levels
It's been full steam ahead here and the rest of summer is looking really busy with lots of fun activities too.
With the recent warm weather, we have seen an increase in bookings for Gorge Scrambling. And right now really is the perfect time to take the the waters of the Lake District.
We've been lucky enough to have enjoyed multiple trips into Church Beck, Stickle Ghyll, the Esk Gorge, and have had a sneaky look at yet another 'new' venue. This one still needs a little more research before we can offer it as an activity, but it does promise to be fantastic, with the added bonus of easy access

We still have some availability for August and good availability for September, so why not get in touch and let's make a plan.

Happy holidays everyone

Rock scrambling workshop at the weekend
Since returning from our little break in Snowdonia, it's been really busy here in the Lakes and we've been out daily on a variety of activities and adventures.
A last minute call from some friends Dave & Sam saw me switching the work schedule around a little to fit in a Rock Scrambling Workshop for them. We did this mostly on Tarn crag in the Langdale valley. Looking at a variety of core rope skills and focusing on efficient movement and rope management whilst mountaineering in the UK mountains.

Straight after our scrambling workshop I was away out climbing at White Ghyll crag, also in Langdale. Sam joined me for this and we climbed a route called 'The Gordian Knot' a 3 star VS with some wonderful climbing on it. Evening is the best time to be at White Ghyll as it benefits from evening sunshine, perfect.

Sunday was a mix rock scrambling and canyoning, all based around the Coniston area. And back into Langdale on Monday and more wet activity with a fantastic session in Stickle Ghyll with brothers Isaac and Luke. The afternoon was somewhat more leisurely with a walk around Loughrigg with Mina.

Lots more happening this week, plenty of walks too

Thanks all

Mark

Stickle Ghyll - Gorge scrambling on a sunny afternoon!

Shower time in Stickle Ghyll!!
To we were joined by a great bunch of guys from Yorkshire. Visiting the Lakes for a Stag weekender. And what a brilliant way to start, Gorge Scrambling :-)
Wanting easier access from the Kendal area and a viewing path running alongside, it was Stickle Ghyll in Langdale where we headed.
After loads of rain recently I was expecting the water level to be high. It wasn't, but there was certainly plenty of it, perfect comes to mind.

After donning all the safety gear and nice warm wetsuits, it was off the the Ghyll we go. Everyone was well up for getting wet, very wet. So all walked through the waterfall 'shower', all jumped into all. the plunge pools too.

We wish all a fab weekend of fun and games in Kendal.

Gorge scrambling is a great activity for Stag and Hen weekends, it's so inclusive, and loads of fun. The Lake District offers some amazing gorges and we know all the best ones. If you're planning a weekend away and want to try something a bit different, give us a call and let's make a plan.

All the best

Mountain running, sky running - Langdale

The fun begins in Stickle Ghyll
With a mixed forecast and lots to do back at base, me & Kate decided on a run / scramble in nearby Langdale.

The idea of going scrambling in the mountains with minimal kit and moving quickly really appeals to me, less to carry, easier and less restricted movement without a big backpack on.
Over recent weeks I've been giving this a try and it's going well. So far all the run/scramble trips have been solo, but today Kate joined me.
With enough just kit between us we set off from the New Dungeon Ghyll and straight into Stickle Ghyll, a rapid and fun ascent began with loads of boulder hopping and easy scrambling by the side of waterfalls and around deep pools. We stayed in the Ghyll most of the way to Tarn crag, then a very short jog brought us to the spur leading up to this. Back with hands on rock but still moving swiftly, it's such a good feeling. A hail shower cooled us down and wet the rock, so we decided on the slightly easier scramble known as 'The Spur' which starts from the right hand side of the crag. Solid, rough, and clean rock awaits the scrambler willing to seek this route out, we urge you to do so, it's brilliant.
All the way to the mini summit we sought out the rocky way for maximum fun.

Then back into running mode as we descend to and around Stickle Tarn, a few walkers still by the dam. The scree path up to the start of Jack's Rake was quite a lung-buster, but good to get it over with quickly!!

A quick breather before the longest scramble of the afternoon, Jack's Rake, a Lakeland classic well deserving of its status.

We moved quickly but carefully as exposure builds very rapidly here, so all movement was considered and precise. We had to stop a couple of times to admire the views, but still were soon at the top and enjoying a well earned cereal bar.

Once again into running mode, we traversed towards Harrison Stickle before following the path down to Stickle Tarn and back to the Dungeon Ghyll.

Linking scrambles up in this way (not necessarily running, walking works fine too) can make for wonderful long days out in the Lakeland fells, enjoying hundreds of metres of rocky ascent interspersed with short walking sections.
This link-up is one of many and each of the valleys offers something similar.

What to know more or have a guided day in the mountains? Give us a call / e-mail and we'll put a plan together for you.

All the best

Mark & Kate

Gorge Scrambling - Stickle Ghyll, Langdale

Lower section of Stickle Ghyll
It's been a really busy few days here in the Lakes, helped by sunny weather no doubt. At the weekend we welcomed a family of 7 here on a short visit. All were keen to experience Ghyll Scrambling so that's how the day began.
To say this family embraced the water would be an understatement, all were swimming within a few minutes and this theme continued, with jumps and swims aplenty.

After lunch we headed to Scout crags, also in the Langdale valley and just a 10 minute walk from where we were parked up. Given the fine weather I was expecting the crag to have a few climbers on it, but no, we had the place to ourselves :-)

Everyone managed about 4 routes, these getting progressively more difficult to add to the challenge. Eventually we were all pretty tired from so much activity. Sun was coming low in the sky and giving a gorgeous light to the valley. We called it a day and headed home, after another cracking day out in this amazing valley.

Big thanks to Jessica for organising the day with us, hope to see you all again soon.

Thanks too to Mila at MIIVKE for adding colour and zest to the photos

Back in the Lake District

Waterfalls of Stickle Ghyll, Langdale
After 5 months over in Costa Blanca it felt a bit odd to go out into the hills on a wet and windy day.

But it took only a few minutes to remember that venturing out in the rain is not only normal, but can be fun and satisfying. The landscape is transformed and has so much more colour during and after rain. Our first choice wouldn't be to go rock climbing on such a day, but there's plenty more to the Lake District than the climbing.

Starting with a nice gentle walk along our favourite valley, Langdale. Revisiting Stickle Ghyll, our most popular Gorge Scrambling venue and watching the water cascade over the rocks and into plunge pools, absolutely mesmerising. Daffodils are starting to flower in the valleys, adding an extra splash of colour, all helping us to forget the sky may be a bit cloudy!

Today I was joined by my pal Sam, and we enjoyed a wet & windy run around Loughrigg. A lovely route that makes for a good introduction to Fell running or simply to be enjoyed as a leisurely stroll to take in the many fine views of the Coniston, Langdale, and Fairfield ranges, as well as the tarns of Loughrigg, Grasmere, and Rydal. The route is relatively flat too, for the Lakes!

With a big downpour again this afternoon we couldn't resist a stroll alongside Stockghyll Falls, Ambleside. These were in full spate and absolutely raging down the mountain, quite a spectacle.

All of these have been hugely enjoyed and we can wholeheartedly recommend any as a rainy day activity.

Thanks for reading

Mark

Great Mountain days in the Lake District

Pavey Ark from Stickle Tarn
Yesterday I had the pleasure of showing Jon & Sara some of the best Rock Scrambles in the Lake District. There's so much to choose from and we'd discussed a variety of options in advance of meeting. A day in Langdale became the plan, and what a great day we had.

We began scrambling within a couple of hundred metres of the car park. Following Stickle Ghyll we scrambled by the side of waterfalls, traversing over and around pools of deep water, and boulder hopped all the way up to Stickle Tarn. This in itself is already a few hundred metres of top notch scrambling. Today this merely got us to our lunch break, a warm up if you like.
The main event lay ahead, across the far side of Stickle Tarn, on the big brooding face of Pavey Ark. Jack's Rake is an absolute classic Lakeland scramble. For situation and character alone it's amongst the very best there is. Add to this the impeccable rock found on. the upper section of the route and for me it shoots up to numero uno.

We cruised up the rake, taking our time to enjoy the moves, the rock, the views, and stopping from time to time to savour the splendour of Langdale and the distant skyline of the Coniston Fells.

All too soon we arrive at the top and on to the summit of PAvey Ark. The wind on the summit was doing its best to ask us to leave, so we obliged!
A hasty retreat back towards the tarn and down to the valley via Pike Howe saw us comfortably out of the bitterly chilly wind.

Costa del Langdale welcomed our tired bodies with warm sunshine and autumnal colours all around.

A brilliant day in the mountains, thanks to Jon & Sara from the flatlands of Norfolk.

Mark
