Guided walks and Rock climbing here in the sunny Lake District

Sunlight bathing the Langdale valley
As is often the case during springtime here in the Lakes, there's been a spell of magnificent weather. Cool, fairly calm, and sunny almost every day. When the skies are clear and the temps are just nudging into double figures there honestly is nowhere on the planet I'd rather be than here in the Lake District. It is truly magical. Yes we are lucky to live and work here and most definitely cherish this. Being able to share the best of the Lakes with our guests and fellow outdoor lovers is an absolute pleasure and privilege.

This week has been busy, a mix of refreshing venues after a winter spent abroad, and lots of folk to take out into the fells and onto the crags.
A visit to Raven crag in Langdale is also top of my list at this time of year. It's a valley crag, gets loads of sun, is quick drying, is easy to get to, and is packed with brilliant climbs. Me & Anna climbed Original route (S) which was great fun. There were plenty of climbers out enjoying the Stella conditions too. I hadn't had chance to check out the descent route post rockfall, so today was a good opportunity to do so. The amount of rock to have fallen was bigger than I had expected, truly massive in fact! But thankfully the descent route has not really been altered at all, not technically anyway.

Another day out on the rock with fellow instructor Si saw us in Borrowdale and that other fine all year valley crag, Shepherds. We cruised through 3 routes, starting with Chamonix (HS), then on to Little Chamonix (VD), and finishing off with Ant Highway (MVS). Whilst not a lot of climbing for an afternoon, the sun was starting to loose its power and chilly fingers were not too far away, so we called it a day, happy with the 3 good quality routes we'd climbed.

If looking for top quality climbing throughout the grade range and want easy access, great views, and great rock, either Raven crag or Shepherds crag fit the bill perfectly. As a bonus, they are in condition very regularly, even during the winter months, just pick a calm, dry day. During the summer they can be wonderfully oven like......sometimes :-)

Mixed in with all this rock action was a fab day of walking with Jason. It's been quite a few years now since getting out in the hills with Jason, so was really nice to catch up and show him an area of the Lakes that was new for him.
The plan was Bowfell, but after a further chat on the drive into Langdale, a Langdale Pikes day was sounding far more likely and that's what we opted for. Up to Stickle tarn then onto the summit of Harrison Stickle for magnificent views far and wide. We descended via Thorn crag and the Dungeon Ghyll. A chilly but clear day made for sublime walking conditions, how lucky were we, ace. No Lambs out on the Langdale fells yet, but not going to be long.

A fab week, thanks to Sarah, Jason, Anna, and Si

Photos will never do justice to the beauty of Esk gorge. Come and experience it, it's the only way
The blog has been a bit slow of late, mostly due to the incredible weather at the moment, meaning we're out almost constantly, so no time to write!
A major highlight of recent weeks has been a visit to the Esk gorge with friends. We had originally planned a day of climbing on Engineers Slabs, Great Gable. But I heard some friends were heading to the cool waters of the Esk and couldn't resist.
Definitely the right decision. All the pools were warm and clear. Much swimming and jumping into the pools was enjoyed, as well as some scrambling. On a hot day in the Lakes, there is no better place to be. On a hot day in the Lakes, there's no place in the world i'd rather be, that's for sure.

There's been lots of other activity happening too. Abseils, scrambles, gorge scrambles and more.

Also lots of rock climbing on the higher mountain crags. A couple of notable days being Dow and Gimmer:

Along with Kate & Leanne, I headed up to Dow crag in the blazing sun. Every time this crag comes into view my heart rate begins to race and my pace quickens, it's simply magnificent and I love it.
We planned on ticking a couple of routes and started with the super classic 'Murray's Direct'. This gave good value climbing the whole way. Sadly, the wind soon whipped up and it became quite cold (we only had minimal clothing with us). So we bailed out for the day and retreated to the warm shores of Goats Water and a picnic.

A fine day on Gimmer was also enjoyed with Andrew from Dubai. Having climbed at many Lakeland crags but never on Gimmer, Andrew was keen to check the place out and see what all the fuss is about. We climbed 'Ash Tree Slabs', 'Oliverson's crawl and Lyon's variation', and finished with 'Main wall climb' to give a trio of brilliant routes. I say brilliant routes, we could have picked any 3 routes on Gimmer and they would almost certainly be brilliant.

I also enjoyed a day introducing Ed & Becky to trad climbing at Shepherds crag in Borrowdale. We climbed most of the routes on Brown Slabs and finished with Donkey's Ears. Another grand day.

Thanks all. Hope to see you again soon

The brilliant 'Route 1' at Upper Scout crag, Langdale
With a fairly settled few days here in the Lake District, we were keen to make the most of it and get out climbing.

Firstly out with Joe for a guided day at Wallowbarrow crag in the Duddon valley. This didn't go quite to plan as it rained quite hard there, so we got 1 route done before the downpour! Thomas is a great route though and worth the drive just for that. 3 pitches of top drawer Severe climbing all the way. The crag was quite busy, clearly many others had seen the good forecast for Duddon!!! We saved the rest of the day with a visit to Raven crag, Walthwaite (Chapel Stile) which was completely dry and a clear sky overhead. We climbed 'Route 1' and 'Route 2' the later having some quite memorable moves and great value at Hard Severe.

We've also spent a couple of days out with local pals Anna & Susan. Firstly visiting Shepherds crag in Borrowdale. Here we climbed 'Chamonix' HS 4b and rather tough I thought! A rather devious move off the big spike. Great route though and one I would definitely repeat. We then moved on to 'Eve' a brilliant VS 4c with a fantastic traverse line on the middle pitch.

And another day in Langdale, the morning spent with Joe (a different Joe) and his family at Copt Howe. Introducing the family to the delights of rock climbing. Langdale helped us no end with this as the weather and views were quite sublime. A great morning had by all.
For the afternoon I met up with Anna & Susan again, the plan was to run up to White Ghyll crag for some scary routes! However the chilly wind got the better of us and we opted to stay low and enjoyed a couple of cruising routes at Upper Scout crag.

Thanks all for a fab few days. Off to Snowdonia tomorrow for a Welsh 3000's before more Lakeland fun :-)

Between and through the showers - Glorious Lakeland

Anna on the crux traverse of Donkeys Ears at Shepherds crag, Borrowdale
The weather has been a bit mixed of late, with most of the mix consisting of rain! Of course there was no way this was going to stop us getting out and enjoying the beautiful Lakeland mountains. So as well as keeping busy working, we've enjoyed a few personal days out too, here's the most recent of them.

On Tuesday I met up with Anna and after a brew and cake at Lodore Farm Cafe, we climbed Donkeys Ears at Shepherds crag. The first pitch was soaking wet, making it much more difficult than normal, and we had decided to climb in our trainers, adding more to the excitement! Thankfully the traverse pitch (crux) is below overhanging rock, so was only slightly damp, holds for feet are small, but handholds are huge, so all good and much fun.
As we had somehow managed to stay mostly dry and heavy rain seemed to be on the way, we called it a day and headed back to the comfort of the cafe for more tea :-)

Thursday brought with it a slightly different variety of rain, it was horizontal, being blown on a strong Westerly wind. A day on Pillar with Dave & Sam had been on the cards, but we needed to rethink this and work with the weather. Pinnacle ridge on St.Sunday crag became plan B, and let's be honest, it makes for a pretty brilliant plan A.
Due to its popularity, the rock stays fairly grippy on wet days and despite being a ridge, i've always found it to be fine on windy days too. Today was no exception. Atmospheric and fantastic. Such a brilliant route, and felt like we had the whole valley to ourselves, adding a remote feeling to the day. Hands had become a little chilly by the time we reached the top, so we stayed roped up until the mountain gave us shelter enough to stop and de-kit.

Friday (today) the rain was fairly similar to yesterday, being horizontal, although thankfully not persistent. Kate joined me on a jaunt to Langdale for some CPD. A quick multi-pitch climb on Upper Scout crag followed by a scramble on White Ghyll Edge and finishing with a descent to White Ghyll crag. The stream bed below the crags, which is normally dry, was in spate this afternoon, a beautiful sight. The water fresh from the sky and having passed over a few rocks to pick up minerals, tasted delicious. Views over to Great Knott and Pike O'Blisco were dramatic as the showers passed over, giving sun and shade in varying quantities. As we're both out working on Scafell Pike tonight, it was decided to call it a day and head home early. Another brilliant day in the mountains.

Thanks to Kate, Anna, Dave & Sam

Classic rock climbs - Lake District

Classic rock Lake District
Troutdale Pinnacle, Black crag
There's been some fairly challenging weather on offer of late here in the Lakes, but between the showers there's been a lot of action.
We've been busy running introductory rock climbing sessions, adding in some bouldering too. And of course out enjoying the wonderful climbs for ourselves too, with visits to: Tarn crag; Raven crag; Pavey Ark; Shepherds crag; and Black crag, amongst others. Climbing classics such as: Little Chamonix; Eve; Middlefell Buttress; Raindrop; and Troutdale Pinnacle. All amazing routes at their respective grades and all routes we've enjoyed before.

Today I was working on a 'Challenge the Wild' event in the Yewdale valley. Providing safety support on Raven crag and helping with a Zip line / Tyrollean traverse over Cathedral quarry.

All are amazing places. If you're interested in guided climbing, adventure activities, or just some insider information about the local area here, please don't hesitate to get in touch anytime.

Top of Black crag, with Derwent Water and Skiddaw in the distance
Well it would be rude not to be making the most of the wall to wall sunshine her in the Lake District at the moment. So we're just back from a day out in Borrowdale.
The morning was spent rock climbing at Black crag with Anna. We did Troutdale ridge, an MVS 4b route with 3 pitches. The middle pitch is the best, but all are worthy, albeit a little mucky.
We finished the morning with some simply rescue scenarios, including abseiling passed a knotted rope.

For the afternoon we headed firstly to the Lodore farm cafe for tea & cakes :-)
Then on to Shepherds crag for more rock climbing. This time with Kate & Leanne. We chose Ardus, a 3 pitch MVS 4b again. Excellent rock and protection throughout, with exciting moves and a thrilling traverse towards the sun to finish.

The crags are all in great condition, perfect for rock climbing. The fells are dry too, so great conditions for hill walking and exploring the Lakeland fells.

If you're planning a visit and would like any help or advice, please let us know anytime.

Thanks to Anna, Kate, and Leanne.

All the best

Fine climbing in Borrowdale and Langdale - Lake District

White Ghyll crag, rock climbing in Langdale, Lake District
Steep moves on pitch 2 of Slip Knot
We've managed to spend quite a lot of time rock climbing over the last week or so. It's certainly been a lot of fun, and along with that has been a significant element of CPD, so time well spent.

An afternoon at Shepherds crag in Borrowdale started things off. A number of 'self-rescue' skills were practiced whilst climbing 3 multi-pitch routes, including the classic 'Little Chamonix'.
Skills practiced included:
Assisted hoist;
Unassisted hoist;
Counter-balance abseil;
Ascending a rope.

And today was more crag action, this time at White Ghyll crag in Langdale. Each time I visit White Ghyll I remember the first visit, that awe-inspiring feeling and foreboding atmosphere the rock seems to exude. Such a magnificent place.
Lots more CPD during the approach walk, with much discussion around the theme of rescue techniques and client care. Then on to the climbing, we did Slip Knot & White Ghyll Wall. Both 3 star routes and deservedly so. The only other team on the crag today were enjoying the expedition of a 'Girdle traverse'!

Thanks to Anna & Nick.

Lakeland Classic Rock, Borrowdale

Derwentwater from Troutdale Pinnacle, Borrowdale
Derwentwater and Skiddaw from Troutdale Pinnacle
Yesterday we were treated to 9 pitches of high quality 'Classic Rock' climbing in Borrowdale. Our first route was to be the magnificent Troutdale Pinnacle on Black crag. 6 varied pitches of excellent climbing, weaving a way through some improbable terrain at the amenable grade of 'Severe'.
Views over Derwentwater become increasingly spectacular as height is gained, so much so, it would be easy and justified to while away an afternoon or evening sitting at the top of this crag whilst gazing over the valley and to the lake.

As we were about to leave, another treat came along, a chance meeting with good friend Tony McKenzie (been too long Mr, let's go climbing on Scafell)! As we were both pretty busy a brief chat and off we both went, Tony upwards on the crag, me & Jane downhill to the road and our onward travel to crag 2, Shepherds crag.

Little Chamonix is possibly the most climbed route in Borrowdale and presents plenty justification for its popularity. 3 pitches of top quality, well protected climbing on fine Borrowdale volcanic rock, what's not to like.
Topping out on the Belvedere with yet more magnificent views over Derwentwater make this a climb & place to savour, I think this is my favourite view in Borrowdale.
But it isn't just the climbing that make this route so popular, a 5 minute approach walk and the delicious food of Lodore Farm Cafe below the crag certainly bring additional appeal.

So, not only have we climbed two 'classic rock' routes today, but we enjoyed every pitch in almost complete solitude, being the first climbers on Troutdale Pinnacle that day, and the only climbers on Little Chamonix at the time, very unusual, but welcome.

Thanks to Jane for the good company and climbing.

Group activities - Lake District

Gorge-scrambling-Lake-District
It's been a very busy summer so far and thankfully that seems set to continue. What we've noticed is more group bookings are being taken, sometimes with 20+ people in a party, so plenty to keep us on our toes with logistics and kit!

Over the last week we've had 2 large groups, including the Scottish Fire Service for a couple of days, sunny days too. We rock climbed, abseiled, and gorge scrambled in the Langdale & Coniston areas, loads of fun with so many lovely people.

And yesterday we were back in the gorge, this time with Helen, Sam, Natasha, and Louise from Norfolk. I'd previously taken Helen & Sam rock climbing, and they were now back for more to celebrate a big birthday. The plan was to go to Eskdale and the magical Esk Gorge. However, a burning clutch sadly put a stop to this and a retreat made to Langdale and the faithful Stickle Ghyll, which after heavy rain was very exciting. Loads of swimming and jumping in the plunge pools, I even went in for a swim too!

Corporate-days-out-Lake-District
Last weekend (19th) I was out supporting friend Dave Stewart of Fresh Air Learning. He was delivering a 'trek prep' day for sisters Sally & Sue, as a preparation for their Kilimanjaro attempt in the autumn, good luck.
After a thorough briefing about equipment for the trek as well as what to expect, and lots of do's & don'ts we headed out onto Lingmoor Fell. Taking in the summit during improving conditions, then negotiating 'fat man's squeeze' on Side Pike, we descended to the Langdale valley for the return walk back to Elterwater, the valley now bathed in glorious sunshine.

Rock-climbing-instruction-Lake-District
There's been some time for personal rock climbing too, and the weather has occasionally given us dry rock. An afternoon visit to Borrowdale and the ever popular Shepherds crag saw us climb Donkeys Ears (S) & Ardus (VS) - thanks Erja and Gemma for a really fun climb.

Picture
Mixed in with all of this has been many more trips to the Gorges of Lakeland, numerous Rock Scrambles, and some fine walks with so many lovely people.

Thank you all for joining us for adventures in the Lake District.

If you're thinking about visiting the area, or already have plans to do so and would like to try some adventurous activities, why not give us a call. We can arrange activities for individuals and cater for larger groups too. Summer is the time to be out in the great outdoors.
