Lake District activities for families

Enjoying the brilliant scrambling on Raven crag
This summer has been our busiest to date, with pretty much non-stop activities happening daily. So a BIG thanks to all who joined in the fun, we really appreciate you choosing us for your Lake District adventures and activities.

September too is looking nicely busy, but with a more generous helping of downtime, so time to do some of our own exploring in preparation for yet more fun times next summer and beyond. This exploring has already began and I'll be writing about one such place in the next blog post.
It is also time for us to start preliminary planning for our winter activities in the Costa Blanca. It's only a month until I head out to sunnier climes, so time to be thinking about any shiny new equipment that may be needed for the coming season.

This post shows some a few recent days out amongst the beautiful Lakeland Fells with many lovely people. Firstly, an afternoon spent Scrambling on Raven crag in Yewdale. We had a warm, sunny day, dry rock that is super grippy, and our reward for reaching the top was loads of Wild Bilberry and stunning views over to Coniston Water. We were joined by 2 families, including 4 youngsters. This proved to be an ideal afternoon activity with just the right amount of challenge to ensure the youngsters were all stretched.
You will find some organisations impose a lower age limit on various activities and we can understand why this is so. However, we only have advisory age limits as each individual is different, with some adventurous 5 year olds being very able and more willing than much older kids. As an example, we are taking a 4 year old rock climbing next month! Along with his parents of course!
We have taken quite a few youngsters through the upper section of the Church Beck canyon in Coniston and to the remote Esk Gorge. All have absolutely loved the experience. But these are not first timers, they have been on similar activities previously, so we and they know capabilities.

The photo below showing us dry scrambling alongside Stickle Ghyll was the start of a mountaineering style day in Langdale. This family had contacted us looking for a scrambling day based on Langdale and at some point Jack's Rake was mentioned. We put together a flexible plan of scrambles that would take us to the summit of either Pavey Ark or Harrison Stickle. As with many of our days out, flexibility is key to success. We began scrambling within a couple of minutes of the National Trust car park at Stickle Barn and followed the Stickle Ghyll water course all the way to Tarn Crag. And yes we stayed dry all the way :-)
We then meandered our way through the rocky spurs and buttresses of Tarn crag, deploying the rope for some short, steep sections. Whilst walking around Stickle tarn it became clear that some weren't keen to go up Jack's Rake, whilst others had unfinished business there. So the team split into the 'picnic by the tarn' and 'Jack's Rake' teams. Naturally I was in the Jack's Rake team with Tim, who was quite apprehensive about the scramble ahead.

We took our time and discussed good scrambling technique and movement, but also stopping to enjoy the views and increased exposure. I could sense the doubt still present in Tim, but this was subsiding as we gained more and more height. His feeling of elation and achievement when I announced we had reached the top was quite a WOW moment. It's times like this that makes our job so worthwhile. The satisfaction and happiness on peoples faces is priceless. A hop, skip, and jump (no, not literally) and we were back at the tarn and fast catching up with Carman and Edith. Another hugely successful day out in the mountains, oh yes.

Gorge scrambling has been a big hit this summer, and rightly so as it's tons of fun and still tons of fun in the rain. The final photo in this post shows perfectly how to jump into that pool in Stickle Ghyll. Some of the gorges here can be equally suitable for 5 - 50 year olds and complete novices or seasoned mountaineers. They really are that varied.

This goes back to being flexible. And as we know hundreds of routes throughout the Lake District, you can rest assured that we can be flexible not only in our approach but also venue choice and how we help you through the activity.

Thanks again all, we hope to see you again soon.

Mark & Kate

Family Adventure Days in the Lakes

Bowderstone
There's been a heatwave going on here in the Lakes District, with lovely blue skies and a big orange orb up above, pretty magic.
And we've been out making the most of it, on Monday with Anne, Andy, Catherine, and Laura. On a family holiday from the fine town of Bath. As they were staying in the North Lakes, not far from Keswick, we arranged an Adventure Day in the Borrowdale valley.
We began with rock climbing at Upper Shepherds crag. This delightful outcrop of volcanic rock is in a superb position, we enjoyed around 4 climbs and a scramble up to the mini summit to soak up the views over Derwent Water and beyond.
This was followed by tea & cakes at the Lodore Farm cafe, delicious. Then off to the Bowderstone for a spot of bouldering for the girls whilst mum & dad enjoyed a relaxing lunch break.
We finished the day with an abseil at the nearby quarry. Both girls and dad were soon whizzing down the quarry face, with Catherine & Laura coming back for more, fantastic.

With big smiles all round and 2 tired 10 year olds, my job was down. It's always such a pleasure and so rewarding to see a happy youngster at the end of an activity day.

Big thanks to the Ellis family, lovely to meet you.

Stickle ghyll, Langdale
The Lake District is currently basking under bright blue skies and a big orange orb, otherwise known as the Sun!
The rock is warm & dry, the gorges have low, but good water levels, and many folk aerate enjoying these stella conditions.

We have been out with Craig, Lorraine, and Daniel who are holidaying here from their home in The Netherlands. They chose a multi-activity day to include Rock climbing, Abseiling, and Gorge Scrambling. So lots to fit in and lots of activity for everyone.
The day kicked off at Scout crags in Langdale. We had the crag to ourselves and used it to both climb and abseil.

After a picnic lunch at the crag, enjoying the stunning views through Langdale and into Oxendale, we headed back to Stickle Barn to prepare for the Gorge Scrambling. Then into Stickle Ghyll for much watery fun, splashing around in the pools, boulder hopping, waterfall climbing, swimming, and pool jumping.

Such a fun day, full of activity that's suitable for the whole family.

Big thanks to Craig, Lorraine, and Daniel. Hope to see you again soon.

Fun filled Family Adventure Day in Langdale

Learning new skills - how to tie in with a re-threaded 'figure of 8' knot.
The Easter holidays are here at last and yesterday was a busy day for us with Mark taking a big group ghyll scrambling in the morning whilst I ran one of our family adventure days for David Temkin and his sons, 11 year old Arieh and 10 year old Solly.

We spent a lovely sunny morning at Scout Crag in Great Langdale, just a short walk from the New Dungeon Ghyll and I was lucky to have Paddy Cave join me to help run the morning session (due to me being slightly out of action still from a recent wrist injury!).  So, for a change I was free to take photos, watch the fun and enjoy the views!  Arieh had climbed before on a climbing wall, but his father David and brother Solly were new to the activity.  As well as climbing 3 routes they also learned how to tie into the rope and to belay.  Arieh was able to put to test all that he had learnt on his recent trips to the indoor climbing wall in Manchester – tying on with a re-threaded figure of eight and belaying his climbing partner.  David and Solly were also keen to learn and by the end of the morning, with Paddy on hand and keeping a watchful eye, they were all confident to belay each other.

We all returned to the Stickle Barn for a drink and some lunch on the picnic benches before saying goodbye to Paddy and meeting Mark who was to join us for the afternoon.

The afternoon was spent at Cathedral Quarry in nearby Little Langdale for an afternoon of abseiling and tunnel exploration.  Whilst Mark set up the abseil we went into the huge cavern where Cathedral Quarry get its name. As often as I go I still always find it an awesome place to be – the sun streaming through the ‘window’ and the huge pillar supporting the enormous cavern. After a little bit of scrambling up rocks and watching people descending the ‘big’ abseil we donned our headtorches and went into the tunnels.  Youngsters always love this bit of exploration in the dark and on request from Arieh and Solly we did the tunnels twice!

By the time we got back to Mark, he had the abseil all set up and ready for us.  First down was Solly, then Arieh, followed by their father.  On the first descent the boys were a little nervous to begin but not for long and by the time they reached the bottom they were already asking to do it again!

Thanks David, Arieh, Solly, Paddy and Mark for a super day out!

Kate

‘Thank you so very much for a wonderful day. Myself, Arieh and Solly enjoyed it so much and you were very kind, patient and attentive with us all. Thank you very much and our sincere thanks to Mark and Paddy whose company we all thoroughly enjoyed. We would recommend you highly and hope to see you again one day’.
