As the trip was last minute, we hadn't time to discuss plans in any detail. But an outline plan was forming. The weather has been incredibly good, with warm, dry, and very sunny days. Perfect for rock climbing as it's not too hot either.
To ameliorate travel from Alicante and save some time, I met Rachel at the airport. We then took the scenic route back to Llosa de Camacho, stopping en-route to explore a canyon near Castell de Castells. This proved to be just right for the amount of time / energy left that day. For anyone wanting to consolidate their abseil skills, a canyon descent is a worthwhile option as there will almost always be a series of abseils during the descent. Oh, and the scenery is stunning too!
The following day we visited Font d'Axia crag (just over the hill from us in Llosa), climbing 5 routes. This crag is a sun trap and tends to get a bit warm during sunny afternoons, this gave us an excuse to head to the coast and visit the gem of a beach that is Cala Testos. Only accessible via a canyon descent (or a long swim), this place is truly special and almost always quiet. Rachel went for a dip in the water, reports back that it was pleasant! I stayed on dry land, well someone needs to stay back and look after the kit, right!!!
Next day we were back by the sea, this time at Toix crags near Calpe. We climbed 2 multi-pitch routes, a total of 6 pitches of climbing and 6 abseils. The crag was very quiet, the sun hot, the views superb, and the rock is pretty lovely too. So smiles all round again today :-)
Wednesday came around all too quickly and it was going home day for Rachel. But not until the evening, so there was time for one more crag and more fun climbs. This time we went into the mountains, to a newly developed climbing area near the village of Tarbena. The peace and quiet found here is magical, often only hearing birdsong. Almond trees blossom below the crag and looking up at the rock, it beckons us to climb. We have time for 4 routes, 2 of which are 30m each, so nice big pitches.
Finishing the day with freshly brewed tea on the sunny terrace back at base in Llosa, such a great few days.
Thanks Rachel, hope to see you again soon :-)
