Unchartered tracks - hiking the path less followed

Don taking a well deserved rest during todays walk
With the Gota Fria weather phenomenon about to descend upon Costa Blanca, I seized the opportunity to venture out into the mountains before it arrived.
Having many times driven along the CV-720 from La Llosa to Castell de Castells, I often wondered what the walking routes along here offered. Today I found out, and was not disappointed.

Not even sure what to call this route, so i'm going for 'La Llacuna' as the signpost suggests. This is the name of the principle summit.
About 4km beyond Benigembla is a large lay-by on the south side of the road, this is immediately after crossing the river. Park here and follow the wide forestry track as it meanders steadily up the hillside. The cliffs high up on the left kept my attention, there's surely many splendid rock climbs to tackle on those fine faces of Limestone, will try to come up with a plan for that!
After about half an hour or so I come across a ruined building (and many Bee hives), I notice a blob of blue/green paint and small cairn heading off left into the scrub. Not sure where it goes, but am tempted to follow it, but not tempted enough. I decide that sticking to the larger track will keep progress quick and there is a storm coming after all!

After much more uphill and increasingly wonderful views over to the Serrella range I reach a high point on the track. Now the dilemma is to carry on or turn back. It looks like to continue may allow for a circular route to be followed, but the map doesn't confirm this. This time i'm tempted enough to give it a go! The wide track circumnavigates the very well tended fields of 'Corral de la Llacuna'. Seemingly miles from anywhere and very peaceful, the fields have bright red/brown/orange soil that has clearly only recently been turned over. The place is immaculate.

Before long the good track ends and a tiny cairn marks the beginning of a narrow path that I hope is leading me back. It's certainly going in the right direction, always a good sign.

Don, who I always have on a lead when in the mountains, has been religiously following the small path (he's brilliant at this, even when the going is rough or terrain vague), but suddenly he is distracted. He's looking left, I look left too. A dozen or so Ibex are watching us. Still and silent, they check us out and seem to quickly conclude we are not worthy of their further attention, so they disappear into the scrubland. This is probably the closest i've ever been to Ibex, they were within 50m of us. Such a wonderful experience.

Don is now on full alert for more interesting discoveries, so is somewhat less focused on sticking to the path!

Just as I had hoped, this small path did in fact lead back to the ruined building, making the circuit complete. Very pleased about that :-)

We find a nice spot for lunch before the final downhill back to the roadside. The Gota Fria has now arrived!

Views today included: Aixorta; Mallarda de Llop; Aitana; all of the Serrella range; Caval Verd; and more. We were walking for a little under 3 hours, although i'd suggest allowing 4 hours to fully appreciate the surroundings.

This is one of many wonderful hikes in the region. If you'd like to know more, or would like to hire a guide for the day, please get in touch anytime.

Thanks for reading

Castell de Granadella - Coastal walks

Looking over to Ambolo from Castell de Granadella
A couple of years ago the nature reserve of Granadella was badly effected by a forest fire. The charred remains are still all too obvious to this day. With a poor forecast up in the mountains, I decided to go and check the place out and visit the nearby castle.

From our starting point on the edge of Cumbre del Sol (summit of the sun) we followed very well maintained tracks heading towards a headland. What is clear straight away is that the burnt trees and scrubland are already making a comeback and the area feels vibrant with vegetation. If anything, the fires may have improved this walk as with less trees the views are even better, and that's saying something!

We turn off onto a much smaller path that weaves a way over rocky terrain, a few more walkers have braved the weather today and we exchange pleasantries. A short descent brings us to the remains of Castell de Granadella. The castle is 18th Century and was destroyed by Brits during the Napoleonic wars!!
It now makes a good place for a lunch stop, with wonderful views over to Ambolo (great climbing and DWS here) and out to sea where many white horses dance today.

Our return route skirts the beach of Granadella - amongst the finest of beaches in the region - before following a dry river bed to regain the plateau and good tracks once more. Whilst the plateau benefits from well maintained tracks, today this was to be the most challenging section due to very high wind speeds. The cobwebs are well and truly blown away.

We we walking for only a couple of hours, although this could easily be extended, and on a warmer day a visit to the beach for a swim would surely be in order.

When the mountains are shrouded in cloud and water falls from the sky, there is still much outdoor activity to enjoy here, this is one such walk.

Rachel enjoying multi-pitch climbing at Toix crag
Early in January, Rachel and two of her friends Asti & Sylwie joined us for a sport climbing holiday. Rachel decided to stay for a little longer and check out more of the climbing here. Less than two weeks later, she is back for more, fantastic!

As the trip was last minute, we hadn't time to discuss plans in any detail. But an outline plan was forming. The weather has been incredibly good, with warm, dry, and very sunny days. Perfect for rock climbing as it's not too hot either.
To ameliorate travel from Alicante and save some time, I met Rachel at the airport. We then took the scenic route back to Llosa de Camacho, stopping en-route to explore a canyon near Castell de Castells. This proved to be just right for the amount of time / energy left that day. For anyone wanting to consolidate their abseil skills, a canyon descent is a worthwhile option as there will almost always be a series of abseils during the descent. Oh, and the scenery is stunning too!

The following day we visited Font d'Axia crag (just over the hill from us in Llosa), climbing 5 routes. This crag is a sun trap and tends to get a bit warm during sunny afternoons, this gave us an excuse to head to the coast and visit the gem of a beach that is Cala Testos. Only accessible via a canyon descent (or a long swim), this place is truly special and almost always quiet. Rachel went for a dip in the water, reports back that it was pleasant! I stayed on dry land, well someone needs to stay back and look after the kit, right!!!

Next day we were back by the sea, this time at Toix crags near Calpe. We climbed 2 multi-pitch routes, a total of 6 pitches of climbing and 6 abseils. The crag was very quiet, the sun hot, the views superb, and the rock is pretty lovely too. So smiles all round again today :-)

Wednesday came around all too quickly and it was going home day for Rachel. But not until the evening, so there was time for one more crag and more fun climbs. This time we went into the mountains, to a newly developed climbing area near the village of Tarbena. The peace and quiet found here is magical, often only hearing birdsong. Almond trees blossom below the crag and looking up at the rock, it beckons us to climb. We have time for 4 routes, 2 of which are 30m each, so nice big pitches.

Finishing the day with freshly brewed tea on the sunny terrace back at base in Llosa, such a great few days.

Thanks Rachel, hope to see you again soon :-)

Aixorta - Big days in the mountains of Spain

Summit of Aixorta
A break from rock based activities, for a day at least that is!
With Kim & Jenny, me & Don enjoyed a fantastic mountain day on the mighty Aixorta. Standing at over 1200m this is a big summit, but thankfully the trail is straightforward so progress quick and relatively easy.

Views from the summit are breathtaking in all directions. Mallada del Llop, the Serrella range, Aitana, Ponoch, Segaria, Bernia and so much more is all on view, majestic indeed.
After a brief lunch stop - in only t-shirts too - we begin our descent, now on vague tracks (probably Boar / Goat) and occasionally bashing through scrub vegetation, this section demands a higher level of concentration and effort, all part of a good quality mountain day. We take a short diversion to check out a 'rock window' which looks out over a massive cliff.
We soon rejoin a marked trail and are able to switch back into daydream mode and become immersed in the beautiful surroundings we find ourselves in.

Arriving back at the car after 18km of walking, we all feel tired but elated. Don quickly falls asleep in that content way only a dog can, such a wonderful sight!

This is just one of many wonderful itineraries in the region, and remember, the weather is often warm, dry, and sunny. All making for perfect walking conditions. Flowers are starting to appear as is the almond blossom. Over the coming weeks these valleys will turn pink in an explosion of blossom :-)

For more information about the area, the walking, the rock climbing and other adventurous activities please give us a call or e-mail. We'll do our best to help.

Segaria ridge traverse

The initial traverse
With friends visiting last week we eased off a little and enjoyed some down-time, although did still manage a day at the splendid Marin crag near Alicante with Wayne, a trip down the Barranco del Pas de Tancat (Bolulla), and a visit to Viudes crag near Tarbena.
Today it was time for some exercise again and what better than the nearby and very dramatic Segaria ridge. Only a 10 minute drive from our winter base in Llosa de Camacho, i'm not sure why we don't visit this one more often.

Our team today was: Kim & Jenny climbing as a pair, and Me, Kate, & Ann climbing as a 3.
We were in no particular rush, so cruised along the ridge, taking time to absorb our surroundings, breath in the fresh mountain air, and of course chat :-)  I'd not been out climbing / scrambling as a team of 3 for a while, so it was a good to revisit these useful skills.

Some will feel happy to solo most or even all of this traverse, which is fine. We opted for the safety of a rope from the initial traverse section onwards. This slows progress a little, but only a little, we think it's worth it.

Our plan was to descend from the midway col, so this includes all the more difficult sections of the ridge, including the crux climb (about grade 4+/Severe).

The weather: yes we've heard it's been a bit cold and damp in the UK, sorry to hear that. It's been the complete opposite here in Costa Blanca. Today the thermometer read 25C! With clear blue skies & light winds what's not to like?
After a day on Segaria, we well remember the term 'Segaria sharp'! The rock on and around this ridge is super, super sharp. Our fingers now tingle from its delights.

With so much amazing 'sport climbing' here in Costa Blanca, it's easy to dismiss the more adventurous mountain days. The 'trad climbing' is excellent, exciting, and adventurous. You're also unlikely to see another person all day on any of the bigger trad routes and ridges. A great tonic after a day at Sella for example.
The trad gear required for most ridges here is fairly minimal. A set of wires, some extenders, and a few 120cm slings. The slings are the most useful kit as there is an abundance of threads in the Limestone.

If you'd like to escape the UK winter for a few days / long weekend, and 'hot rock' is your thing, why not get in touch and let's make a plan.

Lead rock climbing course - Hot rock!

Rachel leading at Murla crag in the Jalon valley
During the autumn Asti contacted us to book a rock climbing course for herself and two friends Rachel and Sylvia. None had climbed in this part of Spain before and for Sylvia it was to be her first time climbing outdoors, exciting times.

We had 2 and a half days to fit lots into, and we did.
Meeting at Sierra de Toix on Wednesday afternoon, everyone seconded a few routes up to 6a. We stayed until dark, taking time to watch the amazing sunset over Sierra Helada and Benidorm.

For Thursday we stayed local to our base in Llosa, choosing Alcalali crag for the morning. With a good mix of leading and seconding, and time spent on technical instruction, this was a very productive morning. By lunchtime, the crag had become busy, and hot! So we retreated to the coast and a little known venue near Javea. Overlooking a small bay by the sea, and with a good selection of quality climbs this proved to be the perfect afternoon crag for the girls. Everyone climbed 3 routes, including more lead climbing too. Then it was time for some exploration of the nearby cove and seashore, it's a holiday after all :-)
Again we stayed for sunset and a darkish walk back to the roadside, fully making use of all the day.

For the final climbing day we stayed local again, this time Murla crag. The aim was to get plenty more leading done, so Murla works well for this, being a short crag, with easy access and friendly bolting. Lead climbs were achieved up to 6a, awesome!
The hot sun began to take its toll and with the arrival of a couple of friends, we retreated to a cafe. But no ordinary cafe. The amazing cake is only topped by the incredible sunsets from Coll de Rates. This was a fitting way to conclude the course, in a relaxed style but with a great sense of achievement felt by all.

Big thanks to Asti, Rachel, and Sylvia. A pleasure to meet you and we hope to see you all for more crag adventures soon.

Mascarat - Adventures & mixed feelings

1/1/2018

#mascaratgorgecalpe
Kate in the narrows wondering if the massive boulder above her head is staying put!
Yesterday we spent some of our afternoon exploring the Mascarat gorge. We've climbed on the upper crags a few times now, but never properly had an explore of the gorge and lower walls.
It's a hugely impressive place and doesn't take long to check out, we can well recommend it for those with a spare hour.

The single pitch climbs at the base of the gorge were mostly in a sorry state, with ancient bolts and scarily steep rock, no thanks!

We planned to try out the first 2 pitches of a 4 pitch climb, Via Aurora. Some friends had recently climbed this and it sounded worth checking out.
We had expected a fully bolted route, it sort of was, but sort of wasn't! The first old peg was maybe 6 metres up then maybe 3 more metres to the first bolt. This theme continued the whole way. So yes there's plenty of fixed gear, but plenty of it is is a poor state. In a way this adds character to the route and gives a more wholesome experience.

Added to this, I definitely didn't feel like I was climbing at all well today, fumbling on almost every move, over-gripping, slipping and sliding on the feet. The climb just didn't flow for me, my movements felt mechanical. Often the footholds would be just too small for my big feet! This wasn't helping.

Somehow I managed to reach the belay at the top of pitch 1, feeling pretty deflated that i'd only just scraped up a 6a/E1. Kate seemed to have a fair bit of trouble on the pitch too, so maybe it is just an awkward pitch, yes that's what i'll tell myself :-)

I set off on the very short upper pitch. This soon stopped me in my tracks. Wow, these moves are hard, and this is the easier pitch!!! I was missing a crucial hold or sequence and couldn't piece it together. It took about half a dozen goes and I was very close to taking some 'air-time' but thankfully sorted myself out and climbed it, clipping the belay above came as quite a relief.

We had a laugh at ourselves, whilst concluding the route felt under-graded.

Despite us only climbing 2 pitches, Mascarat still leaves an impression. The high, foreboding walls, the atmosphere, the road-noise from above, all come together to give a unique experience.

If looking for 'Costa clip up' style climbing in the Calpe area, go to Toix, there's plenty of great climbing there. If looking for that extra dimension, an added twist, then Mascarat could be for you. Go prepared, and wear an 'adventure hat' - it helps!

Happy New Year

Mark & Kate
